چکیده

Digital ecosystems are dynamic: they grow and evolve as new firms join the ecosystem. Yet, the way they evolve over time is not clearly understood. We draw on an evolutionary network approach to explore the evolutionary pattern of digital ecosystems. In particular, we discover that the changing patterns of combination of existing digital components drive the changes in the topological structure of a digital ecosystem over time. To formally test our ideas, we hypothesize the impact of network properties on the evolution of a digital ecosystem, and test them using the data set collected from WordPress.org. We used text mining on the source code data of WordPress plug-ins created from 2004 to 2014 and extracted the list of all API (Application Programming interface) used in these plug-ins. We then explore how the changes in the pattern of combinations of APIs drive the generativity of the platform as new plug-ins continue to emerge in the ecosystem over time. Our findings suggest that the evolution of a digital ecosystem represents a distinct structural interaction derived from the generative nature of APIs. Also, a structural analysis shows that the rate of innovation does not necessarily increase though the number of APIs in a digital ecosystem increases.

The Co-Evolution of Digital Ecosystems

Digital ecosystems continue to evolve, as new external APIs continue to enter into it. Not all new APIs, however, have the same fate: some are successfully connected with existing APIs and spark major changes in the ecosystem, while others are simply ignored. Particularly, some of the components end up playing a major role in shaping the structure of the ecosystem. To systematically explore wha...

The Generative Architecture of a Digital Ecosystem: A Network Perspective

Contemporary digital ecosystems are characterized by their generativity, where third-party developers primarily drive innovations. However, the underlying generative architecture of a digital ecosystem is not well known. In this study, we draw on a network biology approach to explore the architectural pattern of how individual software modules in a digital ecosystem interact with one another to...

The Impact of Digital Government on Whistleblowing and Whistle-blower Protection: Explanatory Study

This paper focuses on the contribution of digital government (DGOV) to Whistleblowing (WB). While considerable efforts have been devoted to DGOV and WB separately, research work at the intersection of these two domains is very scarce; hence and a systematic DGOV for WB (DGOV4WB) research framework has yet to emerge. This paper aims to identify the potential issues in whistleblowing and explore ...

Bubble formation on a single orifice in a gas solid fluidized bed using digital image analysis

Digital Image Analysis (DIA) has been employed to characterize the time evolution of a bubble injected from a single orifice into a pseudo 2-dimansional gas-solid fluidized bed. The injected bubble diameter increased with the square root of time before detachment. During bubble free flight in the bed, its diameter remains approximately constant. The center of mass of the bubble increases with t...
